Fig. 1. A PreSMo is observed mostly by NMR experiments in the target-free state of IDPs. Since free-state IDPs exist as an ensemble of many conformers separated by small energy differences, structural superposition among different conformers along the backbone atoms is not possible. Nevertheless, a structural zsuperposition along a PreSMo is possible as shown in the left panel for the helix PreSMo of 4EBP1 (). A PreSMo may become a MoRF upon target binding as illustrated for this helix PreSMo in 4EBP1 which becomes an α-MoRF when bound to eIF4E.
